Thankful For 90 Minutes

With the season of giving thanks upon us, and personally having recently come back to a regular yoga routine after taking 9 weeks off around the birth of my daughter, I am ever so grateful for the practice of Bikram Yoga. The essential elements that comprise a pure Bikram Yoga class: heat, humidity, mirrors, carpet, dialogue, 26 postures, 2 breathing exercises and 90 minutes are a formula for healing, health, peace of mind, and overall well-being.

In my personal practice, what I have come to appreciate so much is the 90 minutes it takes to do the class. Yes, taking 90 minutes out of our busy days for ourselves can seem impossible. Kids, jobs, homes, parents, spouses, pets, holiday shopping, yard work (the list is endless) take a tremendous amount of our attention; yet when we dedicate those 90 minutes to improve our own well-being, all of a sudden we become happier and more efficient when we tackle our other responsibilities.

The 90 minute class is not an arbitrary amount of time. 90 minutes is how long it takes to do two sets of the postures – the warm-up set and the healing set. 90 minutes is how long it takes to work every part of the body down to the cellular level. 90 minutes is how long it takes to give the mind an opportunity to relax and unwind.

At this point in my life, I am looking to recharge when I leave my household to attend class. Sure, I can get out for a walk or a run, or I can take a bubble bath or even nap for an hour if the stars align. But I’m always left needing just a bit more time for me. 90 minutes of Bikram Yoga is the perfect recipe: it’s enough time for myself without the household totally turning upside down!

So while our lives get busier and schedules get added to, remember that 90 minutes of Bikram Yoga – YOU TIME – is what it takes to be able to hold it all together. It’s a substantial amount of time for yourself but you’re still left with the other twenty two and a half hours in the day.
